This worked out really well for a first attempt, I've been wanting to try this for ages to stop belt slippage on pulleys and drive wheels when running accessories off steam engines under load.
It’s a great hobby and pastime working on your metal lathe or metal milling machine making parts for toy steam engines, Model Steam Engines, Stirling Engines, Flame Gulper and Flame Licker Engines in your workshop modding and modifying things.

Jensen 20g Steam Engine Driven Leonardo DaVinci Mechanical Drum This was a lot of fun to make and to modify, the mods made the kit a real model or toy steam engine accessory. Its extremely loud in use! It was easy to spray paint the kit before assembly and to make the drive pulley on my metal lathe out of aluminum and the drive belt is O ring super glued together. That engine sounds exelant Sounds like a steam locomotive climbing a hill with a heavy load
I didn’t know that you could still buy those caps, pretty cool
I had a long search till I finally found some on eBay.
@@SteamEngines I’m going to start searching ha, I’ve got some of those mini pistols here from my childhood days that take the little red caps, I’ll see if I can find some.
@@darrenfawcett9912 Good luck!
I wouldn’t consider this a “toy” steam engine.
An expensive 'big boys' toy......oh well....I'm happy to not grow up Travis 😊😊
@@SteamEngines I’m not in a rush to grow up either but honestly most people wouldn’t even have a clue how to operate a basic Jensen 75. That 16051 is no toy!!! That’s a real steam engine, just small!
@@TravisSteamAddict91 Its one of my favourite engines Travis, I got it off Geoff 'Steam Demon' around 10 years ago - Cheers Jim
I am insanely Jealous you have one of these!!!!!!!! I can’t find one anywhere it is my most sought after engine I could ever find!
@@TravisSteamAddict91 Mines a Jensen #50 that you are currently enjoying playing with!......Look on German eBay 16051's come up now and again.
Might be a test standard and for changing the battery
Thanks Nick
Even tho steam turbines are basic Their so damn cool On 85 he has one for the headlamp and cab lights You barely open the valve on the turret And it springs into life And there's nothing like the sound they make
I've been really happy with this one I made, its ridiculous how fast it can go!
@@SteamEngines but when are you fitting a chime whistle onto that boiler
Wat een goed idee! Gebruikt u een machine-tap in de klauwplaat van de draaibank?
Yes just match the machine tap to the groove size that is in the pulley. It works very well. Here's the whole video - ruclips.net/video/adQg7KxkGf8/видео.html
Can you make a DIY demon core?
LOL ....I don't think I'll do a Demon Core reactor!
@@SteamEngines :(
Lololol
I bought one, but it seems to create a vacuum inside after dispensing 3-4 drops of mineral oil. I then have to open the cap and close it for the pen to dispense another 3-4 drops. is there a fix for that, or am I using to thick of an oil ?
I wonder why yours is doing that? I've been filling mine with a very thick weight steam oil and don't have that problem. Is it extremely cold where you are? Maybe try thinning the oil your using with some thin sewing machine oil? - Cheers Jim
Excellent idea ... and well performed! 👍👍👍
I'm really happy to be able to now duplicate Wilesco drive pulleys. Cheers Jim
Cool, thank you sir!
What an absolutely brilliant idea. so that's how Wilesco does that to their factory drive wheels! Cheers Lance
Thank you very much for your comment - Cheers Jim
That’s an interesting item. I bet it was louder on your end than it was here on RUclips. I wonder if there’s a way to modify a music box to make music by running it off of a steam or Stirling engine. There are some hand crank music boxes out there.
That's an interesting idea Stephen and something to look for in junk stores etc. Would be great to run one off a steam engine. This one needs to go through one of the transmissions that I have machined up over the years, this was just a test to see if it all held together.....plus I need more room, so that means going outside and its cold here.....Not England cold or Northern States USA cold.... but sure is Aussie cold
well done, gives me some great ideas......Paul in Florida, USA
Thanks Paul, I'd really like to see what you come up with - Cheers Jim
My grandfather built one of these flame lickers in 1950. It looks very similar to yours. I am looking for the design. I thought my uncle said grandpa found the design in a Popular Mechanics issue. I found a flamelicker in the Dec 1938 issue but it does not look much like yours or the one he built. Any idea where the design originated?
G'day Daniel these are sold by Pm Research here - pmmodelengines.com/solar-engine-3/ If you join up here I'm sure one of the gents on the forum would have the information you want - www.officeofsteamforum.com/index.php
@@SteamEngines thank you for the suggestion Jim. However, I finally came up with the right google search words and located the article. It is in the Feb 1950 issue of Popular Science. I also posted a vid of my engine in RUclips.
@@danielernst9921 Fantastic!
I actually wondered how those grooves were made. Fantastically clever.
So did I, I'm happy that I can duplicate the process - Cheers Jim
Thanks for the video Jim! When I get a lathe I’ll have to look at doing that! Stephen
G'day Stephen I reckon it would be pretty easy to replicate the process on a bench drill if you made up a jig.
@@SteamEngines Hey Jim! Thanks for the reply! Yeah I’ll have to get a lathe just because I want to make some pulleys. Stephen
@@Bardsbrothersrailroad Stephen a lathe will be the best thing you ever purchase, you won't know how you survived without one. It doesn't have to be a big one.
@@SteamEngines I really would like to get a lathe as well!!!
@@lancekennedy3712 Best tool you will ever own - Cheers Jim
I like the idea you have however the sheaves on a pully are smooth for a reason: The sides provide a smooth surface for the belt to come in contact with. With all surfaces dry, the belt should have no problem transmitting power to or from that pulley. Any rough surface (i.e. the procedure you're applying here) will cause undue wear to belts like these. Spring belts, because they are heat treated steel, would probably wear the sheave out fairly quickly. Since we are talking model steam, to force a pulley with this much torque, I can't see a use for.
Thanks for your comment but I disagree, many toy model steam engines such as the massive line of Wilesco steam engines come from the German factory with the drive pulleys already hobbed and they supply spring belts. I've always wondered how the steam engine manufactures hobbed their flywheels and wished to be able to do it....now I know and can replicate it - Cheers Jim
@@SteamEngines Absolutely.....exactly how Wilesco does it and using a spring drive band like Wilesco sells it means that the spring coils fit each groove in the drive pulley so there will be zero slippage.....so cool seeing how this is done - Thanks Lance
Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
Thanks Craig much appreciated - Cheers Jim
Very nicely done sir. I have seen sone people not speaking English doing this and thought it is a method worth remembering. Great job
Thanks, its something I've always wondered how the toy steam manufactures did it to their commercially sold drive pulleys. I'm very happy now that I am able to duplicate it. - Cheers Jim
@@SteamEngines I've wondered for ages of this was done, I always thought it was like knurling, this is very clever.
Is this is the most satisfying video int he world?!?!
Thank you !!!
Thanks for showing this Jim, It's not a technique that I had seen before, seems to work a treat. My only suggestion would be that if you have a collet chuck hold the tap in a collet rather than a 3-jaw. Cheers, Alan.
Thanks Alan, yes I have a collet chuck and a large assorted size of chucks but its a pita to remove the chuck for such a simple operation as this. There's not much pressure at all against the tap. I made up some more different sized jigs and hobbed some more ali ad brass drive wheels yesterday afternoon. I'm really stoked to be able to now hob flywheels like Wilsesco does. Its surprisingly simple to do. Cheers Jim
Good job. Something I must try. Cheers Rob
Thanks Rob stoked that I finally got around to this and happy that its surprisingly a fairly simple operation. I made up some more different sized jigs and hobbed some more ali ad brass drive wheels yesterday afternoon. - Cheers Jim
Different. I think it should run a lot slower. There may even be a tune at low RPM. Cheers Rob
Yes definitely needs to be wayyyyy slower Rob. It needs to go through one of the transmissions that I have machined up over the years, this was a test to see if it all held together. I bet you had that diesel heater going today Rob if you out were out in your shed mate!
@@SteamEngines Hi Jim. You could just use a smaller pulley on the engine shaft, rather than that big one. Yes, that heater is a god send. Way better than I thought it would be and heats up that 20 x 30 foot uninsulated workshop no problem. Had it on the last two days. Uses about a litre of fuel for 3 hours on maximum heat. Definitely worth getting. Cheers Rob
great idea Jim iv'e hobbed a worm gear that way before many times, but never thought of its use on pulleys i will put that in the memory bank regards Kev
Hi Kev I'm really happy how well this method worked and how relatively simple it was using a tap in the 3 jaw chuck. I made up some more different sized jigs and hobbed some more ali ad brass drive wheels yesterday afternoon. - Cheers Jim
Splendid idea Jim. Thanks for sharing. Similar effect to knurling. Cheers Nobby
Thanks Nobby I was really happy how this this turned out. I will be able to use this now for all the drive pulleys I make and retro 'fit' it to older ones I've made. As always - Cheers Jim
This mechanical drum works well and looks nice - but IS very noisy indeed! 😎 I‘m curious to see AND hear it slowed down … 👍Cheers, Detlef
G'day Detlef, yes I'm looking forward to finding some time to make it run slower. Thanks and all the best P.s enjoying your steam collection - cheers Jim
Yeah! Pls continue doing content like this! I think that it will be popular soon…
Thank you much appreciated
Super cool!!!!
Wow that is so cool! Enjoyed watching that and looking forward to seeing more of this Da Vinci drum in your future vids.
Thank you Lance much appreciated - Cheers Jim
Such a fun machine Jim. It reminds me of the mechanism in a music box, and a barrel organ. I bet you enjoyed building the kit. Cheers Nobby
Thanks Nobby, it will never be a musical instrument I don't think but will be interesting to see what it like when its slowed down a lot. - Cheers Jim
Highly amusing , slow it down and lets see it again please .
Yep needs to go through one of the transmissions that I have machined up over the years to slow it down Doug, this was a test to see if it all held together.....plus I need more room, so that means going outside and its cold here.....Not England cold, but sure is Aussie cold😄 I'll redo a video and see how much I can slow it down. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated - Cheers Jim
That's an amazing model Jim 👍👍👍 I think I would run the steam engine through a speed reduction gearbox so the drum wheels turn much slower. Great thing for a steam engine to drive though. Cheers, Alan.

Hi Jim. I made one of those years ago. You can also simply use the back of the cutter with the spindle in reverse. That ball race tool can also be used for burnishing, if you want to do that. I'm not a fan of burnishing, but it will do the job, usually with some harmonic pattern in it. Cheers Rob
G'day Rob, someone mentioned burnishing as well so I gave it ago on aluminium and didn't like what it did. Having so many small (sometimes slivers) of offcuts I find the bearing easy to use and quick. I really want to make something like I've seen now on a few vids where guys use a cutting tap in a holder to put/cut grooves in pulleys. It would be so handy to be able to do that for small steam engine pulleys that suffer a lot from belt slip because they are smooth. Have you seen that method or better still ever done it yourself Rob?
@@SteamEngines Hi Jim. No, I've not made "V" belt pulleys that way or seen any in use like that. I usually make pulleys using a 35 degree indexable carbide tip. This is narrow enough to allow machining of any width "V" belt angle ( usually 38 - 40 degrees). I've never tried burnishing aluminium, only steel and brass, which both will work harden. Cheers Rob
@@Xynudu G'day Rob, I'm only using 2mm or 3mm O ring for belting on my small pulley wheels that I machine up for my models engines and slippage under load is always a problem. I'd like to set myself up to do this - ruclips.net/video/XIzlg_uObwQ/видео.html
@@SteamEngines OK I have seen that done before. Should be pretty easy. Not sure how it will go regarding slippage, but worth a try. "O" rings are quite slippery and stiff. You would be better off buying an assorted pack of small drive belts (for CD players, etc) as these usually include a range of sizes in flat and round, made from grippy highly flexible rubber/polyester. Very cheap and don't slip. Cheers Rob
@@Xynudu Just made the parts Rob, busy now till Monday morning till I can give it a go. Fingers crossed it works.....Need to chat with you next week about 'Best bang for buck Aussie Lathe' ....my eldest son wants to buy a hobby sized lathe around the size of yours and mine. Looking forward to see what you come up with Rob, they are a really nicely built engine aren't they. One of the nicest Chinese engines that I own. You may or may not have seen this DIY trip hammer that I built some years ago, wayyyy overbuilt for this engine, but I do have a lot of fun with it - ruclips.net/video/tmpRg0C6xbo/видео.html
@@SteamEngines I just checked out the video. Good build. I will probably go with a vertical stamping head, same as used in old gold mines. Just need some time and warmer weather. Cheers Rob

I need to get a lathe and learn some machining.
Terry when the truck pulled up at my place with a lathe & mill on it, I had never touched either type of machine before....RUclips can be a good educational tool!
@@SteamEngines so true. I learn a lot watching youtube. I really should incest in a lathe and mill. I have had fun making machines from Lego to use with my stationary engines, but I’d probably also have fun making them from metal.
Jensen never made a #5 that burned fuel. All #5s were electric.
G'day Tom yes that's correct, as stated in the video description "This was an electrically heated boiler that I converted over to be fired off a gas flame". - Cheers Jim
